Two Way Change
It often happens that we end up in places we never chose to be. The signs were all there, the roads were all leading to where we would be, but it doesn't become clear until something goes wrong, or when we pause to notice.
Culture - culture of economy, relationships, schools, social media, all of them have a central default tendency based on the constituent participants. Once the general direction is set, that's where it will lean for any onboarding participant.
The systemic problem is that of redesigning the systems, while being in them. Physical systems and those of human minds. Obliging them to take us where we actually wish to find ourselves in the future. We can try retaliating, causing trouble within the existing systems, but that's barely scalable. We can also try designing new systems and hope they will be adopted eventually.
I think the solution is twofold. That when we're stuck in a rut, it's time to inspire people to choose differently. And when we are out of it, to build systems to replace the outdated ones.
