Iteration And Making Mistakes

Why have defined the word 'mistake' so problematically that we're having to drop quotes after quotes pointing out how important it is for us to see mistakes as being a good thing?

The Oxford definition of 'mistake' is "something that you think or do that is wrong". We either need to redefine the word to mean "stairway to success" or "the only way to learn" or maybe stop using this word to begin with.

Let's look at the word 'Iteration'. Oxford defines Iteration as "repetition of a mathematical or computational procedure applied to the result of a previous application, typically as a means of obtaining successively closer approximations to the solution of a problem". Isn't that wonderful? Isn't that all we're ever doing when we commit a "mistake"? We are only arriving closer to a solution.

Mistakes are only a problem if we commit one instead of many.

Iterate.
