Bigger than Dinosaurs

Universe is about 13.8 billion years old. Earth has existed for about 33% of the time the universe has existed. Life on Earth has existed for 84% of the time the Earth has existed.

Here's what the story has been: Microbes → Plants → Animals → Humans

I assume that if the 1993's Jurassic Park was about reviving an age-old microbe or a really old tree, it may not have become as popular. Maybe even if it had featured the revival of the Aurochs, it probably would still be not as impactful. Here's one of the most magical scenes from the movie:

That thing is the Brachiosaurus. It weighs 50 tons - about 10 Elephants, and could peek into the 4th floor of a building. Double its weight upto 100 tons and you get The Argentinosaurus. The largest land animal to ever exist.

Rumor has it that one of the Argentinosaurus peeped into the wrong building and triggered a massive outrage from the Asteroid community, leading to a drawn out war and eventual defeat of the dinosaurs.

Fast forward 50 million years and Mother Earth again births something twice the weight of the Argentinosaurus.

Blue Whale

The glorious Blue Whale. (Which we tried to kill all of in the last century for whale oil, but eventually banned the practice) The largest living creature in the history of life itself. Its heartbeat can be detected from over 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers.

In the 3.8 billion years of life, Earth has birthed about 5 billion species. 99% of them now extinct. Dinosaurs lived for about 4.4% of this time. The Blue Whale has existed for about 0.04%. Homo Sapiens, 0.0079%. How fortunate are we that our tenure overlaps with the life of such a beautiful and magnanimous creature.

May the whales bless us with perspective, wisdom and sanity.
