American Football vs Soccer

Soccer is soccer everywhere. But football in America is a modified version of English rugby.

1800s royal Europeans could afford horses, while all the commonfolk had only their own feet to ride. So we get ball games played by locals getting a broad 'football' tag.

1820s England → Rugby Football → 1863 → let's try it without hands → Association Football → could do with just 'Rugby' and 'Football' → could do with 'Rugby', 'Football' or 'Soccer'

1860s America imports both sports → Rugby catches on in colleges, association football doesn't really → 1880s Americans change the rules, call it 'American Football' instead of 'American Rugby' because why not → 1970s-80s soccer finally gets popular → 'Football' already taken → Soccer it is.

So American football isn't soccer because rugby was also 'rugby football' which got robbed of the 'rugby' part.
